I was talking to a friend/business associate yesterday about content marketing and search engine optimization (SEO). Although he saw the value of content marketing and SEO for larger businesses without defined geographic boundaries – he wasn’t as clear regarding the benefit for local mom-and-pop retail or service businesses.
I pointed out that the way people search for information has changed drastically over the last several years. It used to be that everyone turned to the yellow pages to find information regarding local businesses, whereas now those searches are being conducted online. Depending on which study you read, the percentages range from 74 – 90+% of online users rely primarily on the Internet to find local businesses and conduct research for offline purchases. Further, this trend is expected to continue unabated into the foreseeable future.
This is a trend that no local business owner can afford to ignore. If you own a local business, the sooner you begin developing your own content marketing and SEO strategy, the better. Remember, results from content marketing and SEO efforts accumulate over time – they don’t appear overnight. So, if you start today – you’ll see results that much sooner than if you wait another six months to a year to get serious about it. Worse, if you procrastinate, your competitors may get a head start and you’ll find yourself trying to catch up with their content marketing and SEO efforts.
Do yourself – and your offline local business – a favor and get your game plan in place before your competitors beat you to it.
