NOT Loving the New WordPress 3.1 Upgrade

by Trish Lindemood

Obviously, I am HUGE WordPress fan – which works out well considering I spend the biggest part of my day – every day – working with it or on it. :) I love its search engine friendly features and its (normally) “easy to get along with” philosophy…

That said, I am definitely NOT loving the new WordPress 3.1 upgrade. Not even a little bit…

My biggest challenge has to do with formatting simple text. Yeah, I know. Sounds ridiculous, right?? This is ordinarily one of the easiest things to do in WordPress thanks to the super-intuitive visual editor function.

For example, whenever I try to apply H2 or H3 tags (using the visual editor) – the change is applied to the entire page – not exactly the look I am after… Likewise for bold/italics and the left/center/right justification options.

Another time, an entire page of text was somehow hyper-linked to one of the images on the page. In fact, a bunch of weird, random goofy things like that keep popping up.

When I check in the HTML editor, it’s clear the commands are being applied to the entire document rather than just the highlighted area. Fortunately, it’s easy enough to fix by removing the offending code and putting it where it belongs – but it is very frustrating. And time consuming.

Tweaks that should take 15 minutes are now eating up hours. :(

I should note this problem is most prominent when I paste in text from a plain text file (NOT Microsoft Word – so you’d think any weird formatting ‘junk’ would be avoided, right??) However, I do this all the time – and have been doing so for years without issue. It is often not possible to write everything directly in the WordPress interface when you are exchanging and sharing documents with clients.

This problem definitely started after the WordPress 3.1 upgrade… and I, for one, am really looking forward to fast fix. In the meantime, I am going to hold off on upgrading any other sites for now.

Til Next Time,

PS Would love to hear if anyone else is experiencing the same issue – and what, if any, solutions you’ve come up with – please leave a comment below if you have any thoughts or ideas on this topic!

Uhh, I have experienced all kinds of weird stuff, but I wasn’t sure what the reason was! I thought it might be because I was using a new theme on a site I was working at, but it probably isn’t if you are having the same kind of formatting difficulties.

I hope they fix it soon, because it really is eating up my time. :-(

Hey Satu – although I am not happy to hear you are having difficulties – I am somewhat relieved to know I’m not alone with this.

It really is a major pain and a huge waste of time – but, like you said, hopefully it will be fixed soon. I can’t imagine you and I are the only one having this issue – so here’s hoping that it gets resolved quickly for everyone’s sake!

Hi there would you mind letting me know which webhost you’re working with? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 different internet browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot quicker then most. Can you recommend a good hosting provider at a honest price? Kudos, I appreciate it!

Yes – here is the web hosting service I use.

If it’s not an intended feature, i’m sure they’ll fix it soon. If it is intended, you’re probably not the only one complaining about it, and there’s a big chance they’ll change it back at the next upgrade.
I’m personally not affected by this change, but i wish you good luck and hoping for a fix!
