Plugins are a great way to enhance the functionality of your WordPress website – without having to get too technical.
For example, the Redirection plugin makes it easy to set up 301 redirects from within your WordPress admin panel. For this reason, the Redirection plugin is a useful tool for those who want to mask affiliate links (or otherwise shorten ugly urls) without needing to edit Apache .htaccess files.
Unfortunately, not all WordPress plugins play nicely with one another – or with newer versions of WordPress itself. In fact, the Redirection plugin has an annoying glitch when used in conjunction with WordPress 3.0+. Whenever you add a new page (not post) for your WordPress site, it automatically redirects your existing home page to your newly created page.
I first encountered this problem a while ago (when WordPress 3.0 was released) – but thought it had been resolved. However, I just added a new page to this site and found that my home page was once again redirecting to my newly created web page.
Fortunately, the fix for this is simple:
1.) From within your WordPress admin panel, go to “Tools” => “Redirection” and select the “Group” option at the top of the Redirection admin page.
2.) Then, select “Modified Posts” and scroll down until you find the one that looks like this: /
The blank forward slash signifies your site’s home page – so go ahead and delete the redirection for it – and viola! Your home page will once again see the light of day.
Due to potential conflicts between WordPress plugins (and the fact that installing too many can drag down your site load speed) – it is best to avoid installing every cool plugin you come across. Instead, evaluate each in terms of what you really need your site to do and go from there.
Then, if you ever do encounter a conflict – it will be a lot easier to identify the culprit (by disabling all of your plugins and adding them back one by one until you find where the issue is) and resolve the problem.
Til Next Time,
