I’ve had “social media icon envy” for a while now.
You know what I’m talking about, don’t you? I’m referring to those neat non-standard social networking icons all the “cool kids” have on their sites. Yeah, the ones that practically jump off the page and demand that you follow, Stumble, Digg, or become a fan of that site…
The problem is I had no idea how to add them to my own site. (Ok, I could add them, just didn’t know how to make them work!) Plus, I didn’t want to spend a ton of money for someone else to do it for me. (To be honest, I kept thinking if I ignored the whole social media thing long enough – especially Twitter – it would go away and I wouldn’t have to tackle it).
No such luck.
If you are in the same boat, I have a couple cool things to share with you today!
First is a link to a post that walks you through how to add social networking icons to a WordPress sidebar.
You can read the full post here:
http://internetmarketingformommies.com/adding-social-networking-buttons-to-your-blog-or-website/
I think you’ll agree, this is about as simple and straightforward as it gets.
(To make # 3 even easier, you can create a “sandbox” page (privately published) within your admin panel and upload the images there instead of creating a new folder in the public_html area of your site. While you are uploading the image, fill in the “Link URL” with the web address where you want visitors to land – i.e. your social media url for that particular site). Once you do that, switch to html view and copy and paste the code for the image into your text widget).
Also, I fell in love with some very cool, non-traditional social media icons (check out the sidebar to the right) – and best of all, they are FREE!
You can find (and download) them here: http://www.dawghousedesignstudio.com/archives/2009/free-social-media-icons-old-bottle-crowns-icon-set/
Enjoy!
Til Next Time,
PS If you like this post, please share it on your favorite social networking site (and by all means, let’s connect through my new social media icons!)

Glad you found the post helpful. Those are awesome buttons. Nice find.
Thanks! You are fast – you commented before I finished editing it!
Thanks again for sharing such great info on your site!
Trish, you must have been reading my mind. I was thinking about adding Twitter icon to my blog not so long ago. Now I have a new theme that has premade “slots” for social media icons so I don’t think that will be a problem anymore.
I suffer from all kinds of envies all the time: wordpress theme envy, cool graphics envy, typography envy, plugin envy… You name it, I got it!
lol! I love it, Satu!
I guess one good thing about having any form of blog-related envy is that it can inspire us to find workable solutions!
Thanks for sharing, Trish! I love the ‘bottle cap’ social media icons you’ve got on your site! They really do jump off of the page, and add that special “je ne sais pas” to a blog. Great work!
Hi Robert – thanks!
I was looking for something a little different and really liked the toned-down color scheme and antiqued effect of this series! Glad you liked them!
Thanks Trish!
I was looking for information on how to make my blog more social media friendly and this helps a lot!
Thanks for sharing!
