How to Kick Your List-Building Efforts Up a Notch

by Trish Lindemood on June 28, 2010

So far in this series on email marketing, we’ve covered the basics of setting up a list within aWeber, as well as how to create and customize your email opt-in forms.

(If you are just joining us, you can check out  other posts in this series by clicking the “Archives” tab in the nav bar above and selecting “email marketing”).

Today, let’s talk about kicking your list-building efforts up a notch. Specifically, we’ll look at 2 ways you can develop a more focused list-building strategy for your business.

So far, the email opt-in forms we’ve talked about have been incorporated into an existing site (either in the sidebar or as a lightbox attached to a specific page or post).

Regardless of where you place them, the goal is to make your opt-in forms easy to find so site visitors don’t have to go looking for them (because… they won’t). :) Adding them to your sidebar ensures they appear on each page – and a lightbox is hard to miss because it’s right there – front and center – wherever you install it.

However, you can take this a step further by creating either a separate landing page specifically designed to enhance conversions… or you can set up a mini-site exclusively for this purpose.

With the first option, all you would need to do would be create a brand new page (not a post) within your existing site. (If you are using WordPress, I recommend you select the “no sidebar” option within the “Page Attributes” area off to the right in your admin panel). The reason for this is you want to remove all distractions from the page so your readers have only 1 choice to make: whether or not to sign up for your list.

The second option – setting up a mini-site for your list – is a bit more involved… but it isn’t too complicated if you break it down to an actionable checklist.

This week, we’ll talk more about these two options – and look at how you can quickly and easily set up either option for your own email marketing efforts. Plus, we’ll talk more about what to include on your opt-in landing page in terms of content, etc… to encourage your readers to sign up.

Til Next Time,
