The 3 Most Important Things the Last Year Has Taught Me…

by Trish Lindemood

One year ago today…I registered the domain name for this site – and it got its first visitor the next day, (although I am pretty sure it was me… :) )

At the time, I needed someone to install my WordPress theme – and I paid plenty to have it customized. (I also didn’t realize that my hosting account included unlimited domains – I think I paid for 3 separate hosting accounts before it dawned on me… duh!)

Now… I can get a new site up and running on my own – including customizations – very quickly. In fact, this is now one of the primary services I offer. I still outsource the custom headers – but because I order so many, I get a great deal on them.  (Let me know if you need help with your own site).

Here are the 3 most important things I learned over the last year:

  • Promoting your content is more important than creating it. (Gasp! I can’t believe I just said that!) It’s true. Don’t get me wrong – you still need to create awesome content – but if you don’t go out into the world and find an audience for it… what’s the point?

One of the many great tips I’ve picked up from Susanne Myers  from the Affiliate Treasure Chest was the concept that you should spend about 20% of your effort creating content – and the remaining 80% promoting it. That is probably the biggest mistake I’ve made over the last year with this site – creating content comes more naturally to me, so I invested 80% of my effort on that instead of promotion.

Using this 80/20 idea -  for every post or page you add to your site… try to find at least 4 off-site opportunities (i.e. guest blog posts, comments, or article marketing) to promote that specific page or post. (Important!!) If, however, you are trying to rank for a  competitive keyword – you may need to build a lot more backlinks to do so.

Which leads to the next point…

  • When you do your off-site promotion – link it to a specific page or post rather than your general site or blog page. Also, whenever possible, link to those specific pages with an anchor text link for your targeted keywords. (For more information, see this article on how to create an anchor text link).

Most likely, not every page or blog post you create will be link-worthy. Instead, try to identify your very best pages – (Great content combined with a solid monetization strategy) and then develop a list of keywords you want those pages to rank for in the search engines. I find it helpful to draw up a game plan and block out a specific period of time to work on this activity. Otherwise, it is too easy for me to get distracted and go off on a tangent.

Which leads to…

  • Time management is the most important skill you can learn. If I don’t block out specific chunks of time for very detailed activities – I end up way off track. With all the distractions online – perhaps you struggle with that, too? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked at the clock only to realize it is already 2:30 in the afternoon – and I’ve barely scratched the surface for what I wanted to accomplish that day.

I’ve learned that I do my best creative work in the morning. Therefore, I now turn off my phone, shut down email – and block out that time to do nothing but write – and guess what? I get more accomplished in those 4 hours that I used to all day. This strategy also frees up my afternoon for promotional activities. It works out great.

I’m sure if I really think about it – there are probably a lot more things I could add to this list. However, these 3 definitely fall under – “I wish I had known then, what I know now.” Depending on where you are on your online marketing journey… perhaps they can help you, too.

Til Next Time,

Great stuff, Trish. Especially that last one. Time management can completely make or break a project and your business in general. It’s one of those things that I think everyone struggles with, the important part is to keep fighting it until you win and find a pattern or routine that works for you.

Kelly McCausey June 17, 2010 at 9:54 am

Great takeaways Trish! I’m a time chunker too, especially when I have a lot of heavy deadlines.

I think it’s awesome that you’ve even taken the time to sit down and pin point what’s been working for you. So many don’t!

Hey Trish, “Promoting your content is more important than creating it” and that does sound kind of strange, but really, it’s true. I can spend hours tweaking and fiddling with my content but by the end of the day I’ve done nothing to promote it. I guess that’s because I enjoy writing more than promoting :-( It’s easy to spend more time on the things we enjoy ;-) Nice Post!

Trish Lindemood June 17, 2010 at 10:11 am

Thank you, Liz!

We’re one the same page… I much prefer creating content to promoting it – I guess that is where the writer in us struggles with the business owner part of us! I think it’s possible to find a nice balance between the two – but still something I am working on achieving.

Trish Lindemood June 17, 2010 at 10:13 am

Thanks Kelly!

The time blocking has been key for me – that and making lists. I have lists floating around every where… now I just need to develop the ONE master list and I’ll be all set! lol! :)

Trish Lindemood June 17, 2010 at 10:17 am

That is so true, Loretta… everyone is different and what works for you, might not work for me and vice versa.

Obviously, the more you want to accomplish, the more critical this becomes – but I always find it amazing how much more you can accomplish when there is already lots on your plate.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Happy Birthday! Those are great lessons to learn (and share with others). You were a quick study — it takes many people a really long time to get those lessons down pat. May you have many more successful years that bring you exactly what you want.

Trish Lindemood June 21, 2010 at 6:59 am

Thanks Denise!! To be fair, I’ve been a student of online marketing for about 2.5 years… so not as fast a learner as you might think! ;) This site wasn’t intended to venture into IM territory – it was meant to showcase my writing portfolio. Funny how things evolve sometimes…

Thanks for the good wishes!! :)

Hey Trish,

New to your site. I came across it on the BlogZone on LInkedIn.

I liked your post – simple, but with a very clear and concise tips.
Thanks for pointing out its good to link to those specific pages on your site. I always forget to do this and just link back to my blog’s homepage. I’ll be sure to keep this in mind more often!

Keep up the great work!
Lauren

Hi Lauren – thanks for stopping by!

Linking to specific pages took a while to sink in for me… it was kind of a big ‘a ha’ moment, actually. Often, when I would see a post that inspired me to comment, I didn’t have a a specific page/keyword in mind… and would just shoot from the hip on it.

Now, I try to be a little more prepared by having a backlink building game plan in place – and by setting side a specific chunk of time each day to work on it. I don’t have it perfected by any means :) – but at least I feel a little more in control of my time that way…

(PS – checked out your site… very cool! :) )

Angie (Losing It and Loving It) June 27, 2010 at 9:49 pm

Happy bloggy birthday, Trish! Great take away tips. I need to work on the time management part myself.

Trish Lindemood June 28, 2010 at 7:49 am

Thank you Angie!

I think time management is a lifelong journey… rather than an end destination. (At least that is how it is for me!) I either plan my time… or it escapes me.

Satu June 28, 2010 at 9:10 am

Happy birthday, Trish and Web Copy Results!

I found your tips very useful too and I completely agree on the third tip. :-)

How did you learn to tweak Wordpress, did you take a course on it? I know how to do simple things with Wordpress, but I think I could learn much more and it would be a potentially profitable skill to have.

Glad to see your business thriving!

Dan Reinhold from Work At Home Humor June 28, 2010 at 9:35 am

A year, huh?

It doesn’t look a day over 11 months…

There’s one bright side to your preference for creating rather than promoting content – more guest posting!

Dan

Trish Lindemood June 28, 2010 at 9:52 am

Thanks Satu!

No, I’ve never taken any formal courses on WordPress. I am an avid reader – and learn well by doing. So, I just started poking around the admin panel and playing around with the different options – i.e. widgets, etc… I also do long-tail Google searches when I want to figure out something in particular.

Another big plus has been investing in the Thesis theme. They offer an awesome support forum where I’ve picked up quite a bit of useful information.

Trish Lindemood June 28, 2010 at 9:55 am

:) Too funny, Dan!

and to think it doesn’t feel a day over 90…

Guest posting is definitely at the top of my content promotion list. Actually putting a couple things together before I start a serious promotion campaign – but guest blogging will be the cornerstone of it!

Karon Thackston June 28, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Happy birthday, Trish! Wishing you many more!

Trish Lindemood July 1, 2010 at 8:37 am

Thanks Karon! – Actually it’s WCR’s “birthday” rather than mine – but always up for an opportunity to celebrate! :)

Meg July 17, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Happy birthday to WRC! Amazing what you’ve learned in one year. I too have been learning about internet marketing and blogging over the last year and it is encouraging to hear you talk about the same challenges I’ve faced. I even made the same “pay for multiple hosting accounts when one would host unlimited domains” mistake. Doh!!

Keep the great content and promotions coming!

Lynette Chandler July 17, 2010 at 7:06 pm

I love all those points and it is a great reminder for those who have been round the block too.

Trish Lindemood July 29, 2010 at 12:09 am

Thanks Meg!

LOL – yeah, I felt pretty silly when I realized my mistake with the hosting account! :) Oh well, I guess the good news for both of us is that we did figure it out sooner rather than later! :)

Trish Lindemood July 29, 2010 at 12:15 am

Thanks Lynette! I’m glad you found value in the points outlined in this post.

I know what you mean about having been around the block – although Web Copy Results just passed the one year mark, I’ve actually been a student of online marketing longer than that. This site was originally intended to simply showcase my writing portfolio to potential clients – and over the course of just one year – it kind of took on a life of its own – and has taught me a lot along the way! :)

Bonnie Christian August 15, 2010 at 1:13 am

‘Happy Birthday’ Trish!. . . I love your site; great articles. I enjoyed the one on ‘writer’s block’. You’ve really come a long way; I’m proud of you. I should have known if anyone can get a lot accomplished in so little time, you can.

Trish Lindemood August 16, 2010 at 7:42 am

Hi Bonnie! I was just thinking about you!! I hope you are doing well – would love to hear how your own online journey is going! :)

Thank you for the kind comments – I’m glad you are enjoying the content. I am currently fleshing out the details for the “2nd annual 90-Day Content Marketing Challenge” – and am really excited about it.

Are you going to be at NAMS4 this weekend?

You got a really useful blog I have been here reading for about an hour. I am a newbie and your success is very much an inspiration for me.
